Pepper Sprays - Self Defense 101

Self Defense 101 – Pepper Sprays

Self defense is one of the most important talents a person should learn and gather through life. Though there are several ways of self defense, not all can be followed by everyone and not all can be right for all situations. For example, what are the chances of your karate working against six assailants with guns who do not come within hand’s reach to you? Surely you will not risk your life and limb with some karate chop you have seen in the movies or just learnt at the Karate Dojo?

While the above example may be a bit far-fetched, after all, all assailants will come within hands reach sometime or the other, it is a fact that not everyone can be karate or other forms of fighting guru to ward of assailants. Today, stun guns and pepper sprays are a few of the more used ways of self defense. Stun guns, more popular as 'tasers', the name of a company that produces stun guns, run an electric shock through the assailant’s body on contact. This low current and high voltage shock overrides the assailants muscle triggering mechanism. A stun gun can therefore leave your assailant writhing in pain or paralyzed temporarily. The earliest types of stun guns were the cow prods, which provided a shock to the cattle with the help of the two metal probes connected via metal wires.

Pepper sprays are another type of assault-negating substances. There are several shapes and sizes in which pepper sprays are available. Pepper sprays are also known as OC spray. It is a lachrymatory agent that irritates the eyes and causes tears and pain. Some pepper sprays may even cause temporary blindness for the assailant. Pepper spray is an inflammatory substance. The use of a pepper spray causes difficulty in breathing, the closing of eyes, a runny nose and coughing for a duration that depends on the type of pepper spray used. Therefore, pepper sprays are considered to one of the best assault-negating products today.

You can get pepper sprays in various shapes and sizes, so that the assailant is really taken by surprise when you press the button on the pepper spray. How surprised would an assailant be if he gets some blinding stuff out from a lipstick holder, or a cigarette lighter?
